IC
Name: Inquisitor Clara Trevelyan
Canon: Dragon Age
Canon Point: Dragon Age: Inquisition, after defeating Corypheus, completing The Descent DLC storyline, in the middle of the storyline of the Jaws of Hakkon, and before the events of Trespasser DLC.
Age: 24
Appearance: Physical appearance, armor, staff, and anchor mark on her left hand.
Abilities: Clara is a mage, which means that she is born into magic and able to use magic, both in combat and everyday life. She uses mana to fuel her magic and spells; once she runs out of mana, she has to wait for her mana to recharge before she can do anything more than shoot basic bursts of magic from her staff or hands. Her magic is also limited in that any enemies she attacks with her magic must be in direct line of her sight, and within a certain range of distance. Also, her attacks are prone to ‘friendly fire,’ which means they have the potential to not only hit enemies, but allies as well.

She is able to use her magic practically, such as a form known as Energize, allowing her to rebuild and repair various objects such as broken bridges, steps, etc., and she is able to light Veilfire, a magical kind of fire that doesn’t require wood or oil to burn, though it can still be quenched by water; it serves both as a light and is able to reveal hidden writing, such as runes.

She knows how to cast Barrier, a temporary, magical defense that protects herself and those close enough in range from incoming attacks, including the Energetic Defense upgrade which allows the magical barrier to remain in place for a slightly longer period of time, and Dispel, which is able to remove hostile magic and status effects from allies and stripping beneficial effects (such as Barriers and Guard) from enemies. She also knows how to use Immolate, which is a fancy of way of saying she’s very good at setting people/things on fire with an explosion of fire magic, and the upgrade of Wildfire, which allows her to do more damage and requires less of a cooldown period. She also knows how to use Flash Fire, which is a burst of fire that causes enemies to panic, and she knows Fade Step, which allows her to move in bursts of speed, able to get out of tricky situations fast, along with the upgrade of Frost Step, which freezes any enemies that she passes.

Her primary focus of the three elements available is Storm Magic, with the following abilities: Chain Lightning, which sends out a jolt of electricity to enemies, arcing between multiple targets, with the upgrade of Arcing Surge, extending the reach of Chain Lightning and hitting more enemies, Energy Barrage, a burst of elemental energy that depends on the element of the staff she uses (ice, in the case of the staff she currently uses), Lightning Bolt, which is exactly what it sounds like, summoning a lightning bolt to strike and paralyze an enemy, with the Exploding Bolt upgrade, in which the lightning bolt deals more damage if there are enemies nearby, Static Cage, in which she can cage enemies within a circle of lightning that paralyzes those who try to leave, and the upgrade, Lightning Cage, which can hurt and possibly kill those who leave its boundaries, and strikes enemies with a lightning bolt for damage taken while trapped within the cage.

In addition, Clara has chosen the specialization of Rift Mage with which to focus her magic, a form of magic that relies on both offensive spells and spells that weaken enemies. Clara can use Veilstrike, in which she creates a fist to slam enemies to the ground, along with the upgrade, Punching Down, which allows her to cast Veilstrike more easily and weakens enemies so that they deal less damage, Stonefist, in which she casts a fist made out of rocks that smashes into enemies, sending them flying, along with the upgrade Unblockable Force, which deals additional damage to enemies with Guard, Pull of the Abyss, a small force that pulls enemies in towards a central point, smashing them together, and the upgrade, Devouring Veil, which draws enemies in fast enough to cause actual, physical damage.

With the anchor in her hand, Clara has the ability to close, open, and seal rifts, as well as use of Mark of the Rift, an attack that sucks in enemies, causing massive damage, and even, in some cases, instant death. She also has the focus ability of Firestorm from the Rift Mage specialization. Both of these particular abilities require focus, which takes a long time to generate, so Clara will not be using them often, if at all, and her anchor will essentially be useless here without any rifts to open or close.

Also, I will always check in/ask with other players before using Clara’s magic in ways that will affect them and/or their characters in any way.

(Optional) Personality:
  • Clara Trevelyan is a woman of multitudes. A woman of noble birth expected to lead a life of service in the Chantry, life threw her the first of many curveballs when she exhibited magical talent at a young age, leading her to the Circle instead. Clara herself is very much like those sorts of curveballs; she’s not what people expect her to be. People often underestimate her, and they pay for doing so dearly.

  • She’s a survivor, above all else, and she knows how to appease people in order to do so; she’s skilled in the art of telling people what they want to hear. Her noble background means she knows how to use diplomacy to her advantage when she so chooses. Though she herself wanted to join the mages when the Circles rebelled, she remained at Ostwick, a Circle that maintained an appearance of moderation in the face of the ongoing, violent conflicts between mages and templars. (It’s worth noting that Ostwick eventually rebelled, as well.) She obeys when her superiors send her to Haven as a representative of the Circle, and in the aftermath of the Chantry explosion, she does not argue with Cassandra when she arrests her; she immediately agrees to try and help when Cassandra explains that the mark on her hand might be able to seal the Breach in the sky above. As a mage, she knows too well what happens to mages who pose problems or are perceived as threats; as the suspected murderer of the Divine, she knows she walks on even thinner ground on top of her status as a mage.

  • She’s a woman of faith; she confirms to Cassandra that she believes in the Maker and Andraste, though she doesn’t actually believe that she is chosen as the Herald of Andraste as many people believe her to be. As she discusses with Dorian, one of her companions, she believes in the Maker, but not the Chantry; the Chantry desperately needs to change. She exemplifies this faith in the way she helps Leliana through her personal struggles; she encourages Leliana towards more compassionate choices, such as when she convinces her not to kill a traitor or when she emphasizes that the people who serve the Inquisition are not disposable. She also encourages Cassandra to rebuild the Seekers of Truth, an order of warriors that serve the Chantry, by improving them and making them a better order than before.

She also demonstrates her criticism of the Chantry by acting against the Chantry’s interests. When she discovers documents that reveal the truth of what happened at Red Crossing, a violent incident that sparked an Exalted March, essentially a massacre of Dalish Elves by the Chantry in the name of spreading the Chant of Light, Clara gives these documents to a Dalish clan she meets in the Exalted Plains instead of turning them over to the Chantry. When, in the Frostback Basin, she discovers that the first Inquisitor, Inquisitor Ameridan, is an Elf, and that the Chantry has kept this fact secret, she advocates that the truth of Inquisitor Ameridan’s race be known, despite what the Chantry might say.

  • Though Clara herself believes in the Andrastian faith, she struggles with the Inquisition as a religious institution. She does not believe herself the Herald of Andraste; when made Inquisitor, she declares it for the purpose of defeating Corypheus. That said, given that the Inquisition is founded on the orders of Divine Justinia, it is undeniably tied to the Chantry and Orlais, a fact that causes notable tension in Ferelden especially, given the fact that Orlais has conquered and occupied Ferelden in the past. Clara protests that the Inquisition is an independent organization, but both Varric and Morrigan point out that it is the ‘army of the faithful.’

  • In spite of her more serious-minded qualities, Clara does, in fact, have quite the sense of humor. She often makes sly remarks and participates in banter, such as when she tells Varric and Dorian that she wants to be dealt in on a bet they make regarding her chances against Corypheus. She also joins Sera in playing pranks on her Inquisition advisors, and later joins her on the roof to throw cookies at unsuspecting passersby. Her humor is also reflected in the choices she makes while sitting in judgement, particularly when she banishes an Avvar clan to the borders of Tevinter after one member tried to kill her and his father threw goats at the castle of Skyhold in retaliation, or when she judges the remains of Duchess Florianne, commenting that her skeleton shall ‘do theater about the evils of evil,’ and the box shall become an ‘end table for orphans.’

  • Clara, even before taking up the mantle of Inquisitor, possesses a strong will. She makes tough choices, and she defends those choices fiercely. While still a prisoner, she’s asked to decide which would be the best route to reach the Temple of Sacred Ashes. She chooses the mountain path, where a group of scouts has gone missing, and she demands that the group, who have been arguing, to ‘Work together. You all know what’s at stake.’ When given the choice to pursue help from either the templars or the mages, Clara chooses the mages. She faces fierce opposition because of this choice but she never backs down or apologizes for making that choice. At the Winter Palace, Clara ensures Empress Celine survives, as well as reconciling her with Briala, and she allies with the Grey Wardens instead of exiling them from Orlais in the wake of the siege of Adamant Fortress.

  • Of course, Clara is far from perfect; she has her share of negative traits as well. She has a tendency towards using violence to solve her problems; she has a fair amount of blood on her hands from all the people and monsters she’s killed, and she tends to most often rely on Lelilana, her spies, Cullen, and his forces when performing war table missions over Josephine and her diplomacy.

Her choices have consequences, not all of them good or beneficial. When she chooses the mages over the templars, she leaves the templars at the mercy of a demon infiltrating their ranks, and they ultimately fall under the sway of Corypheus, becoming his main forces. When she tells the Iron Bull to call back the Chargers from fighting the Venatori in order to save their lives, she sacrifices the Quanari battleship and those fighting on it, as well as the potential for an alliance with the Quanari. When making her way through the Temple of Mythal in the Arbor Wilds, Clara decides to follow the path of those who would come to worship Mythal, as a sign of respect. Noble though her intentions are, as the Iron Bull points out, the longer it takes for them to make their way through the temple, the more Inquisition soldiers die fighting Corypheus’ forces outside of the temple.

  • She doesn’t always act for the greater good, no matter what she might tell others, or herself, for that matter. She wants to do the right thing but the fact remains that her moral compass tends to operate highly in shades of gray; she’s willing to get her hands dirty to accomplish her goals. While she is compassionate, and someone who does care deeply, she is also selfish, and she acts in her own self-interests and those of her friends; she is hypocritical in what she preaches versus what she actually practices.

She makes use of the Inquisition’s resources for non-altruistic purposes. When Blackwall is revealed to actually be Thom Rainier, a wanted criminal in Orlais guilty of murdering known allies of Empress Celene, Clara uses the resources of the Inquisition to bring him in for judgement. Instead of returning him to Orlais, Clara gives him to the Grey Wardens to atone for his crimes, which helps to sour the alliance the Inquisition forms with Orlais. As a mage, she not only sides with the rebel mages, she offers them a full alliance with the Inquisition. This is both a practical, strategic choice made and a selfish endeavor for Clara as a mage who strongly believes in mage rights/freedom, the rebellion’s cause. Even though Clara believes the Well of Sorrows should ultimately be destroyed, she allows Morrigan to drink from it because of her knowledge of Elven artifacts and history, even knowing how power hungry Morrigan appears to be.

  • While she is a mage, Clara still comes from a noble, human family; she is privileged, more so than the average mage, and this privilege adds to her ignorance, such as when she speaks with researcher Mineave, an Elven apprentice, and reacts in a condescending manner at her attitude towards templars, or when she automatically assumes Sera means Elves when she mentions ‘her people.’ This ignorance ultimately comes back to haunt the Inquisition. Throughout her acquaintance with Solas, he provides hints that he knows more than he lets on; while she often asks him questions about his studies in the Fade, or what he knows of Corypheus, she never follows through in pressing him about how he knows so much about the Elven artifact that bestowed her anchor upon her and allowed Corypheus to gain as much power as he did.

  • Clara is a Big Damn Hero, which means she cares a lot, likes to mouth off in the face of danger, and has the tendency to show little regard for her own safety. She stays behind when Haven is attacked to give the surviving townspeople and members of the Inquisition time to escape, fully expecting to die, particularly when Corypheus shows up with his pet dragon. She wants to save everyone, even knowing that, realistically, she can’t, and she’s always quick to throw herself headlong into danger, such as when she hunts down, fights, and kills high dragons throughout Fereldan and Orlais.

  • She has a fair amount of weaknesses. As someone willing to get her hands dirty in order to save or protect people, she is certainly vulnerable to those making threats against those she cares about, such as her friends and advisors, or innocent people caught in the crosshairs. She frequently relies on violence to solve her problems; she’s killed a lot more than just demons, and she’s also allowed her friends to kill people who didn’t necessarily deserve to die. She’s made tough choices, and she knows she’ll make them again. As a mage who relies on magic, she believes her abilities can get her through anything, and this can make her reckless and prone to making careless mistakes. She’s willing to risk herself in order to protect others, both her life and her integrity.

  • She's also often overwhelmed by her position of power and the amount of faith people place in her and her abilities; she struggles constantly with the fear of letting everyone down or not living up to their expectations of her, even after defeating Corypheus.
